Killing Uniqueness

February will be a sad month for many small businesses. On February 10, 2009 something will change.

What, you ask? If you are a regular consumer, you may not yet be aware of the upcoming changes that will affect your purchasing decisions of children's products. As a consumer it is your right to know. Here are the briefings:

In August 2008, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CSIA law) to significantly decrease the amount of lead that is permitted in ALL children’s items sold in the USA. This law will mandate that a 3rd Party tests all the items and components of a product sold in the United States and it will require tracking for these products. This law will go into effect on February 10, 2009.

What is the reason for the law? This law was made after the investigation of repeated measurements of recalled toys, mainly imported from China, that exceeded acceptable lead-content levels, harming children.

But this is a good thing you say! Yes it is. Protection of our children from harmful and potential chemicals is a major concern of every parent.

Then what is wrong? Well, the current Congress rule is too broad. It has failed to target the source of the problem and tackle the situation from those sources. This law will affect everyone: Large multinational
Manufacturers as well as the small and micro businesses need to comply with costly testing for all the children's products they offer. The requirements to comply with the testing costs required by this law can be incremental and in many cases it will be very difficult for the smaller businesses to comply.

What testing is required? Businesses providing Children’s items (12 years old and under), must provide testing certification of a piece made in every batch that is produced, this certification must be made of every single component used in the final product. If the size and/or the color of the product changes, new testing is required. (For example, let's say I make a child's pair of earrings: I'd need to send it to an authorized Lab in the US to have it tested , this could cost $350 to $1500 for lead to obtain the certificate needed so I could sell. Now if I decided to make the exact design of earrings but in a different color, or maybe with slightly larger beads, I would have to repeat the same testing process). Yes, Depending on the type and number of components, testing could run from $350 to $1500 for a single product of a single batch. To make things more complicated, the testing could be intrusive and therefore it could destroy the product themselves, making one-of-a-kind products harder to comply. This type of requirement could easily drive small businesses no other option but to close their stores, or discontinue their line of products.

What type of items are affected: All children items that are targeted and promoted to children of 12 years and under. This includes: Toys, clothing, jewelry, books, fashion accessories, blankets, housewares, room-decor, art supplies, bicycles and more.

What are the consequences of this Law? As of February 10 2009 it will no longer be legal to sell children's products without certification of testing. It is sad that many children will not be able to enjoy the beautiful array of uniquely designed items that millions of local hand-crafters produce, items made with dedication and love. Without the costly certifications, these items will be considered illegal.

At Crazy4clipons we do not agree with the broadness and the requirements of this law, but we respect it and we are complying. Being unable to provide the necessary testing for each component of our children’s line of earrings, the Kids product line at Crazy4clipons will be closed as of Feb 01, 2009.

Children's earrings will not be available for sale and our line of jewelry will only be available to customers 13 year or older.

Bridal Earrings

A lucky Bride

This year is all about organizing, therefore the last week I have taken the time to go through and to sort all the emails I received last year.

Although I love to read all the wonderful comments from my customers about their purchases I also like to read and ponder on their suggestions and how to meet their future needs. While sorting all the information I was surprised to find out lots of comments from many Brides-to-be. Many commenting on their frustration to find modern, contemporary bridal earrings that catered to non-pierced brides, bridesmaids, maid of honor, Mother of the Brides, Mother of the Groom and flower girls.

The comments ranged on finding quality handcrafted bridal clip on earrings that would be modern, elegant, easy to wear and comfortable. Others, were frustrated to find out how many of the members of their bridal party did not have pierced ears, so finding the perfect bridal clip earrings for them had become another task for them to accomplish.

For a bride-to-be the main issue seems to be style. They are to find that perfect pair of earrings that will blend perfectly with the rest of the accessories: Veil, necklace, hairdo and dress or the pair that will take a single place on the stage, that dramatic pair of earrings that will carry the show. This can sometimes be a surprise for a bride who is not used to wear earrings in the first place, or who has in the past worn clip earrings which were old-fashioned, chunky and/or uncomfortable to wear. So the issue then becomes double-fold ... to find a pair of earrings that looks perfect but also is comfortable to wear.

For bridal parties, the issue seems to be a little more complicated than just finding a single pair earring with the right clip backs, it is a matter of finding a group of earrings that will cater to different tastes for pierced and non-pierced wearers and that will be comfortable for all to wear.

After reading all these comments, I have now created a section of Bridal Earrings on our website :). I am hoping this will helpful in sorting out bridal earrings styles that can made as pierced and as clip earrings.

Wait! The party ain 't over yet. Let's bring on the Chinese New Year!

Just as any other special Holiday event in our lives, where we give gifts of Love and Friendship, the Chinese New Year celebration is no exception. During this special event it is customary to exchange gifts. There is an ancient Chinese custom which has a great importance, it is called Hong Bao. This custom involves giving small red packets with "lucky money". Married couples and elder people give these hong bao to kids and un-married young people to wish them blessing and well-being.

How much to give? No worries, this celebration is about good-will. Some good advice provided to me was to give amounts matching number "8" ( fa ). The reason?, well it sounds like "get rich" in Chinese :)

Other pretty little gifts? Well, sure!

If you want to give a little something to your friends and kids, how about a pretty set of earrings. 2009 Resolutions

New Year, New Resolutions, New Goals ... well, maybe some of the goals are the same I dropped last year =) - but it really does not matter, the important thing is that I get another chance!

Every year I start with a list, and although I may not keep all of them, I do fairly well in others. So, I give myself lots of credit.

Blogging was on my list last year, yet I only blogged once (hey, better that none). I also had other resolutions such as:

• Doubling my customer base (done!)
• Mastering the Search Engine Marketing process (done!)
  
• Placing my business on first page on most top Engines (done!)
• Learning new design techniques (done!)
• Keeping up with my newsletter (done!)
• Streamlining my campaigns and my templates (done!)
• Becoming a full merchant (done!. Yup, taking all major credit cards, Paypal and Google checkout)

Not bad in my book. This is of course on top of my regular web maintenance, improving my photography skills (a 2007 resolution), improving ways to cut paper, improving ways to handle accounting (an ongoing resolution) ... all on top of a full-time-non-related job.

Yet, although blogging was put on the back burner, it has never left my list. So this year I get another opportunity to put it back on the front burner.. let's see how I do this time --- can't promise I will blog everyday ( I am realistic), but after this blog I will be at the same level that I was last year ;)

What are other resolutions? To do better with the ongoing and ever-changing marketing schedule and to plan better for seasonal campaigns, to increase my product line in many new exciting ways (wait until you see what I got in mind for you!), to keep on learning both in my artistic designs and also in my technical skills, and as always to manage my time even better.

Yes, it is a tall order and I can do it. I have amazing support from my family and my customers. There is an incredible satisfaction when I receive great feedback from brides, from mothers and kids letting me know how happy they are to wear their clip earrings. That in itself has been the ultimate goal once I started this business.

So, I invite you to buckle up with me, we are in for a wonderful trip in 2009!

It has been a looong time since posting on my blog, in spite of all my intentions to keep up with it, it simply has not been possible. This will be, without a doubt, a resolution for 2009!
